Privacy Policy for TOMOTOMO

Effective date: October 1, 2026

TOMOTOMO is an ebook reader, PDF reader and audiobook player for iOS. Your books and audio files stay on your device, and page scanning and audio alignment run on your device. Some features use the internet: sync, the AI features (Companion, Imagine, custom covers, PDF audio), the free books and audiobooks browser, and chapter lookup. This policy explains what each one sends and to whom.

By using TOMOTOMO, you agree to this Privacy Policy.

Summary

Imported Files

When you import ebooks (EPUB), PDFs or audiobooks (M4B, MP3 or MP3 folders), they are copied into the app's storage on your device. TOMOTOMO does not upload them anywhere. Deleting a book in the app, or deleting the app, removes them.

You are responsible for making sure you have the right to import and use any content you add.

Camera and Page Scanning

TOMOTOMO asks for camera access for page scanning. The camera is used only to read the text on a printed page and find the matching spot in your book or audiobook. Text recognition (OCR) happens on your device using Apple's frameworks. Images and recognized text are not uploaded or shared.

Speech Recognition and Audio Alignment

TOMOTOMO asks for speech recognition permission to line up an audiobook with its ebook, so you can switch between reading and listening at the same spot. The app transcribes short parts of your imported audiobook using Apple's on-device speech recognition. It does not use the microphone, and the audio and transcripts are not uploaded. The resulting sync points are saved with your book-to-audiobook pairing.

Accounts and Sync

When you first open the app, TOMOTOMO creates an anonymous account with Google Firebase Authentication. It has no name, email or contact details, only a random identifier. You can later sign in with Sign in with Apple, Google Sign-In or email and password to sync across devices. If you do, we receive the identifier and the email address from that sign-in method. Firebase may also process technical data such as IP address and device information to keep accounts secure.
